Palm Springs Modernism Week

Palm Springs Blog

What is it about Palm Springs? From the weather, to the Hollywood connection, to the rich architectural history, Palm Springs is a special place! Modernism Week is a particularly special time to visit the city. Here are five reasons why:

1. Private Homes

During Modernism Week, 90,000 people decent into the desert for various events, but the most popular events are always the private home tours. Palm Springs is a mecca for modernist fans, but there are few “house museums.” The only way to see many of these architectural stunners is to book one of these Modernism Week tours. This year, we toured the Edris Residence, the Cody Glass House, the Lowey House, and several in the Racquet Club Estates neighborhood and Twin Palms neighborhood.

2. Parties

This is my fifth Modernism Week. Some of the best events are the various parties offered. Most parties benefit local organization and preservation efforts. There are parties to open the week, and parties to close the week. There are parties at each of the various Show Houses. There are parties to celebrate having a party. So dress up, head out, and make sure you’re on the list (AKA buy a ticket).

3. February in the Desert

The weather in Palm Springs is generally fantastic, averaging 350 days of sunshine per year! February is the perfect time to visit with temperatures in the mid-70s during the day and mid-50s at night. Spending warm days and cool nights in the desert is highly refreshing!

4. Food + Drink

Palm Springs has some fabulous restaurants. Every year, we simply must eat breakfast at Cheeky’s to get the icing free cinnamon roll and a flight of bacon (this year’s bacon flight favorite flavor was Red Hot candied bacon). Another favorite is Mr. Lyon’s! By the same folks that brought the flight of bacon, Mr. Lyon’s is a beautiful restaurant with an attached speakeasy, perfect for cooling off after a day in the desert. It’s great to have trusted favorites, but it’s always exciting to try new places! Just be sure to have a reservation during Modernism Week!

5. Joshua Tree

This was a new one for 2018! For years, I’ve wanted to see Joshua Tree National Park. This year, we finally took the time to go visit. Located only 45 minutes away from Palm Springs, this park spans two deserts (Mojave and Colorado). We were able to do some very lite rock climbing and hiking around some massive rock formations. It was truly awe inspiring.
